Short-Term Disability

Short-Term Disability (STD) coverage (available in most locations) helps protect all or part of your income if you become unable to work due to illness or injury.

How the Plan Works

At no cost to you, Kraft provides Short-Term Disability (STD) coverage. Benefits generally last for up to 26 weeks if you become disabled.

If your location provides Accident & Sickness (A&S) coverage, see your Human Resources Representative for more information.

Using the Plan

If you expect to be out of work for an extended period of time — generally five business days (exceeding 40 work hours) — take these steps to receive Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits:

  1. Inform your manager and disability case manager (DCM) and/or your Human Resources Representative you are applying for STD benefits.
  2. Notify Aetna of your disability and initiate a claim by:
    • Calling 1-877-201-9187 from 8 am – 5 pm Eastern time, Monday – Friday, or

    • Going to www.wkabsystem.com (make sure to enter Company ID#: Kraft).

  3. Give Aetna the following information:
    • Your name, address and telephone number

    • Your Social Security number

    • Your date of birth

    • Your supervisor’s name and telephone number

    • Your Kraft Foods department, job title and shift

    • A description of your injury or illness

    • An estimated return-to-work date

    • The title and description of your occupation

    • Your physicians' name, address, phone number and fax number

    • The last day you worked and the first workday you missed.

  4. Sign and return the authorization and overpayment forms. Aetna will send you all the required paperwork:
    • Keep a copy for your records

    • Give a copy of the authorization form to your physician.

  5. Watch your mail for periodic letters from Aetna notifying you of your approval or need for further information.
  6. Get a signed medical release from your doctor or nurse once you’re ready to return to work.
  7. Maintain communication with your manager, DCM and Aetna.
  8. Provide the required signed medical release from your doctor to your manager and Aetna before  you plan to return to work. Aetna must also review and approve your work release prior to your return to work. You are responsible to confirm Aetna has been provided all of the necessary documentation to do so.

For your claim to be considered for benefits, it must be received by the disability claims administrator (DCA) no later than 21 calendar days from your last day worked. Contact your local Human Resources Representative with questions.

NOTE: A medical diagnosis or doctors note alone does not guarantee disability payments. Your medical condition must result in an impairment severe enough to prevent you from performing the substantial and material duties of your job at Kraft. The medical documentation must confirm the impairment through objective measures and test results.
