Getting Medical Care Away from Home
If you are traveling or have a child away at school, you may need help getting
care away from home. Here are a few tips to help you out:
Seek care for a life-threatening emergency at the nearest hospital.
Call Member Services within 48 hours if admitted to the hospital so coverage
is provided at the approved level.
All pre-certification requirements apply for nonemergency care.
-
Use Find a Doctor to help
locate in-network providers.
Call Member Services (the number is on your medical ID card) for help if you
need care while traveling.
Call Health Dialog —
the 24-hour phone line — at 1-800-369-0142 (TTY: 1-800-369-1284) for guidance on
your benefits and the options available to you while you are traveling.
When traveling, make sure you have your doctors’ and pharmacies’ numbers and
enough medication with you (not packed in a checked bag) to get by in an emergency.
Purchasing Prescription Drugs While You Are Traveling
If you must purchase a prescription outside of the United States, you will initially
have to pay for the prescription upfront. Then send in a paper
claim form
along with the original receipt for the medication. You will be reimbursed according to the
Network price (what you would have paid for the drug if you had used a Network pharmacy), less
the appropriate co-insurance amount.
International Travel Assistance
With the International SOS Program, if you are an employee (or family member) traveling on business or assignment outside of your home
country, you have access to 24-hour worldwide assistance through the International SOS Network for immediate help with medical assistance such as doctor or dentist referrals, dispatch of prescription medication, or hospitalization.
For more information, see International SOS Program.
